Paperman, the short that precedes Wreck-It Ralph, is the finest “traditionally” animated (that is, CG/hand-drawn hybrid styled to look analog) work Disney has done since the Brizzi Brothers’ Firebird sequence from Fantasia/2000. It combines the carnal intrigue of Cindy Sherman’s New York with the innocent World War II–era romanticism of Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet, as improbable as that may sound.
