When Mercutio burst onscreen in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, I didn’t know who Harold Perrineau was. I spent an entire freshman-year afternoon mistakenly crediting Chris Rock with a daring and unexpected follow-up to his performances in CB4 and Sgt. Bilko. (In 1996 the Internet Movie Database was within our grasp but not always at our fingertips.)
In 2012, the relentless promotion of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted has punished us with the image of a zebra, voiced by Chris Rock, togged up in a Mercutio-esque afro wig—and in so doing has created a tiny Einstein–Rosen bridge of mnemonic panic inside my brain.
